What Is CBD?

Written by Jen Kerr
To date, there are up to 120 known cannabinoids identified in the cannabis plant. Some of the more common cannabinoids are CBG, CBN, THC, THCV, CBD, CBDA and CBC. While we have heard about THC for decades, the cannabinoid getting all the attention lately is CBD. Cannabidiol , or CBD for short, was first identified in 1942 by American chemist, Roger Adams, and his team at the University of Illinois. He is also responsible for discovering THC (tetrahydrocannbinol) almost 20 years later. Dr. Raphael Mechoulum made the first breakthrough towards understanding the effects of individual cannabinoids in 1963 when he successfully identified the stereochemistry of CBD. He would continue to study these cannabinoids for decades and in the 1990’s he would discover the endocannabinoid system, or ECS for short. CBD research has shown remarkable potential in the studies regarding convulsions/seizures, anxiety, inflammation, nausea, behavioral issues, cancer and other diseases and other ailments.
